Győr: Guide
Győr (på tyska Raab) är en stad belägen i nordvästra Ungern ungefär mitt emellan städerna Budapest och Wien. Floderna Rábas och Rábcas ligger precis vid staden och floderna fortsätter senare ner i Mosoni-Duna cirka tio km från Donaus huvudlopp. Invånarantalet mätte år 2001 till totalt 129 412 personer. Győr är även huvudstad i Győr-Moson-Sopron
Stadskärnan har en biskopsborg (grundades runt år 1000 av Stefan den Helige) och omges av Belváros med barock- och empirestadsdelar. Fästningen i Győr förstärktes på 1500-talet för att stoppa Turkiet|turkarna från invasion. Győr har även ett utmärkt trafikläge vid flodsystemen samt för järnvägen Wien-Budapest. Under 1800-talet växte Győr snabbt som industristad med waggon och maskinfabriker. Än idag dominerar, tillsammans med kemisk-teknik|teknisk industri, fortfarande dessa industrier stadens näringsliv.
Staden sägs ha sina anor från någon gång före Kristus födelse till 400-talet då Arrabona (romersk bosättning) bosatte sig i staden. Győr erövrades senare av ungrarna.
