Gelsenkirchen är en stad i norra delen av Ruhrområdet i den Tyskland|tyska delstaten Nordrhein-Westfalen. Staden har ca 287 000 invånare (2002).
Staden ligger i ett område av Ruhr där tidigare stora mängder stenkol brutits och där man i 117 år i koksverk fram till 1999 producerade koks.
I Gelsenkirchen pågår en profilering mot produktion av solenergi genom tillverkning av solceller. Staden ligger i ett område där flera motorvägar korsar varandra och den har alltså ett utmärkt läge ur kommunikationssynpunkt.
I Gelsenkirchen finns två yrkesinriktade högskolor - den ena inom området offentlig förvaltning och den andra inom områdena maskintillverkning, elektroteknik och informationsteknik.
Fotbollslaget FC Schalke 04 i den tyska förstaligan hör hemma i Gelsenkirchen.
