Erfurt är den tyska delstaten Thüringens huvudstad.
Staden har cirka 200 000 invånare (2002) och är säte för den tyska förbundsarbetsdomstolen.
I staden finns såväl universitet som yrkeshögskola, vilka är till stort stöd för den industri, som är högteknologiskt inriktad med produktion inom elektronik och telekommunikation. Utöver dessa områden finns industri inom maskin- och livsmedelstillverkning. I Erfurt finns dessutom ett av Tysklands största och modernaste centra för godstransporter.
Universitetet, som var det tredje på tysk mark, öppnade sina portar år 1392. En av de personer, som fått sin magisterexamen där, är Martin Luther, som 1505 klarade av sina studier vid den filosofiska fakulteten.
Under slutet av 1800-talet utformade socialdemokratiska tänkare Erfurtprogramet som legat till grund för den moderna socialdemokratin.
1970 var Erfurt platsen för det första tysk-tyska toppmötet, det vill säga förhandlingar mellan Västtyskland och DDR. Detta var en del av Willy Brandts Ostpolitik.
Sport i Erfurt
Under DDR-tiden var Turbine Erfurt och efterföljaren Rot-Weiss Erfurt ett av lagen i DDR:s högstaliga. Efter turbulenta år med stora ekonomiska problem under 1990-talet spelar Rot-Weiss Erfurt i 2. Bundesliga 2004-2005. Erfurt blev östtyska mästare 1954 och 1955.
Varje år spelas den internationella ungdomsturneringen Luther Cup.
