Chemnitz: Guide

Chemnitz (uttalas ) är en stad i sydöstra delen av Tyskland. Den är belägen cirka 40 kilometer från statsgränsen mot Tjeckien i delstaten Sachsen.

Staden har omkring 250 000 invånare (2001) och är en av sydöstra Tysklands viktigaste industristäder, med bland annat el-, kemi-, verkstads- och textilindustri. Den har ibland kallats "Sachsens Manchester".

Under DDR-tiden 1953-1990 hette staden Karl-Marx-Stadt, men före återföreningen, genomfördes en folkomröstning, som med 76% ja-röster beslutade att återgå till det gamla namnet.

Under trettioåriga kriget stod här den 4 april 1639 slaget vid Chemnitz.
