Santiago de Compostela: Guide
Santiago de Compostela i provinsen A Coruña, är huvudstad i den Spanien|spanska Spaniens autonoma regioner|automoma regionen Galicien. Staden ligger nordvästra Spanien, en av Europas viktigaste vallfartsorter.
År 813 upptäcktes här en grav som man ansåg tillhöra Aposteln Jakob|aposteln Jakob den äldre. Han hade visserligen blivit avrättad i Jerusalem, men man menade att hans kvarlevor förts till Spanien där han en tid varit verksam.
Vallfartsorten blev snart känd i hela Västeuropa, och pilgrimer strömmade till från alla håll. Längs pilgrimsvägarna drogs man samtidigt till andra och mindre vallfartsorter. Till de medeltiden|medeltida pilgrimerna hörde bl.a. den heliga Birgitta och hennes make Ulf Gudmarsson (Lejon)|Ulf Gudmarsson. Santiago de Compostela utgör alltjämt ett pilgrimsmål av stor betydelse.
I Santiago de Compostela finns en stor katedral, som byggdes sannolikt under 1000-talet till 1200-talet. Påven Calixtus II grundade ett ärkebiskopssäte där 1120, och ärkebiskopen har sin cathedra i katedralen.
Stadens universitet, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, grundades 1495.
Gamla staden i Santiago de Compostela blev 1985 uppsatt på UNESCO:s Världsarv|världsarvslista. Även pilgrimsleden genom Frankrike och Spanien finns med på Världsarvslistan, se vidare Jakobsvägen.
