Klaipėda: Guide
Klaipeda, Tyska|ty. Memel, är en stad i västra Litauen.
Staden, som har ca 192 000 invånare (2003) är en viktig hamnstad sedan medeltiden. Överhöghet över staden har växlat åtskilliga gånger under de senaste 1000 åren. Klaipeda har tidvis tillhört bland andra Tyska Orden, Sverige, Ryssland, Tyskland och Sovjetunionen.
Staden är belägen vid Östersjön vid inloppet till Kuriska sjön. Klaipeda har färjförbindelser med Tyskland, Sverige och Danmark och ca 25 km norr om staden, utanför Palanga (Litauens främsta badort), finns också ett flygfält med dagliga förbindelser med utlandet.
Historia
Litauen intog staden år 1923. Som innan dess var tysk. Tyskland tog senare tillbaka Memel år 1939 under Hitlers styre. De hade staden till år 1944 då den tillhörde sovjetunionen.
Klaipeda har åtskilliga gånger genom historien utsatts för bränder (främst förorsakade av främmande trupper), men fortfarande finns i staden en gammal stadsdel med vackra korsvirkeshus.
