Rennes: Guide
Rennes är huvudstaden i regionen Bretagne, samtidigt préfecture i departementet Ille-et-Vilaine i Frankrike och huvudort i Frankrikes_arrondissement|arrondisementet Rennes (arrondisement)|Rennes. Staden indelas i 11 kantoner.
Rennes ligger där floderna Ille och Vilaine flyter samman, och är den viktigaste hamnstaden i Bretagne. De viktigaste industrigrenarna i Rennes är bilindustri och telekommunikation. Det finns två universitet och många andra skolor i Rennes. Antalet studenter uppskattades 2001-2 till cirka 58 000.
Historia
Där floderna Ille och Vilaine flyter samman så grundade det armoriska folket Redones under det första århundrandet f.v.t. staden Condate. Arkeologiska utgrävningar har lokaliserat stora mängder av mynt som de givit ut, bland annat den så kallade Amanlisskatten, som hittades 1835. Sådana mynt kan beskådas på museumet i Rennes.
Redonerna anslöt sig till den galler|galliska koalitionen mot Rom år 57 f.v.t., som krossades av Crassus. Fortsatta oroligheter, där bland annat romerska sändebud togs till fånga fick Julius Caesar att skicka trupper till området. År 52 f.v.t. anslöt sig många redoner Vercingetorix trupper. Men området föll snart helt under romerskt styre. Under romarna kallades Rennes för Condate Riedonum. Staden låg strategiskt när via Osismii. Under hot från invasion på 200-talet e.v.t så restes en tegelmur runt hela staden, och den blev känd som den röda staden.
Under medeltiden befolkades Rennes allt mer av bretoner, och kom från och med 851 att utgöra en del av det bretagnska riket.
I modern tid är Rennes känt för att rättegången mot Alfred Dreyfus (se Dreyfusaffären) ägde rum där.
