Poitiers: Guide
Poitiers (ca 85 000 invånare) är en stad i centrala Frankrike vid floden Clain, huvudort i departementet Vienne. Från staden kommer bland andra drottningen Adelheid av Akvitanien och Michel Foucault, vars far och morfar var läkare där.
Historia
Poitiers grundades före det romerska riket av kelter|keltiska piktaver. Vid slaget vid Poitiers (732)|slaget vid Poitiers 10 oktober 732 slog en franker|frankisk armé under Karl Martell den framryckande araber|arabiska armén, och om vinsten varit en förlust skulle det inte helt otroligt kunna leda till en katastrof för västerlandets existens. Och även om västerlandet skulle ha levt kvar är det inte alls säkert att Spanien skulle återtagits så snabbt som det gjorde, vilket skulle kunna ha lett till att dagens Spanien skulle vara moriskt och islamatierat. Frankernas hänförare var den för vår historia väldigt betydandeKarl Martell.
Under det hundraåriga kriget stod ett annat slaget vid Poitiers (1356)|slag vid Poitiers 19 september 1356 där en fransk armé slogs av en engelsk.
Karl VII av Frankrike grundade stadens universitet 1432.
Poitiers var huvudstad i Poitou, den frankrikes provinserhistoriska provins som styrdes av Greve av Poitiers|grevarna av Poitiers.
